Copy dashboards to other users

Dashboards are stored per user, not per namespace. To give someone else the dashboard you built, copy it to them with the ewx-cli. Dashboards can be copied to a single user, to a permission group, to everyone on a namespace, and across namespaces.

⚠️ Warning: This overwrites the current dashboard for the user!⚠️

Always first make sure the user wants their dashboard overwritten. Any manual changes made by the user are gone after transfer.

note

Copying a dashboard by hand through the console is no longer possible. The users page no longer exposes user properties for editing, so the dashboardconfig property cannot be copied and pasted between accounts. Use the ewx-cli instead.

Before you start

Install the ewx-cli and log in once. The steps are in How to use the ewx-cli to transfer configurations.

You need platform administrator rights to write dashboards for other users. Without them, the command stops before changing anything.

Copy a dashboard

The command takes the source namespace, the email address of the user who owns the dashboard, and the names of the dashboards to copy:

$ ewx-cli config dashboards demo/enrx_org_001 user@energyworx.org "Dashboard_1" "Dashboard_2"

Without any further options this copies both dashboards to every user on that namespace. Use one of the options below to narrow it down.

Choose who receives the dashboard

OptionWho receives the dashboard
(none)Every user on the destination namespace
--user user@energyworx.orgOne user. Repeat the option for several users
--user-file users.txtEvery email address in the file, one per line
--group field_techsEvery user in that permission group, by group name or ID

--group cannot be combined with --user or --user-file.

$ ewx-cli config dashboards demo/enrx_org_001 user@energyworx.org "Dashboard_1" --group field_techs

Copy to another namespace

Add --dest-namespace. The destination users and permission groups are then resolved on that namespace instead of the source one:

$ ewx-cli config dashboards demo/enrx_org_001 user@energyworx.org "Dashboard_1" --dest-namespace demo/enrx_org_002 --user other@energyworx.org

Copy all of a user's dashboards

Leave the dashboard names out and every dashboard of the source user is copied:

$ ewx-cli config dashboards demo/enrx_org_001 user@energyworx.org --user other@energyworx.org

What to expect

  • If a receiving user already has a dashboard with the same name, you are asked whether to update it.
  • Users who have never signed in have no account yet and are skipped with a warning.
  • Users who have no dashboards at all are set up automatically — nothing needs to be prepared for them.
  • The receiving user has to refresh the dashboard page (or log out and back in) before the new dashboard shows up.

Type ewx-cli config dashboards --help for the full list of options.
